Greymouth Webcam, New Zealand
Greymouth now has a live web camera updating weather and image information every 30 minutes..
The project has been initiated by the Rotary Club of Greymouth, past President David Minnoch and co-ordinator John Boyes who had the vision to promote Greymouth on the internet as a tourist destination and dispel the myth that "it always rains on the West Coast".
Grey District Council Mayor Tony Kokshoorn enthusiastically supported the project and gave us the council's backing
Greymouth i-SITE Visitor Centre.
www.takeabreak.co.nz Ltd. supplied and installed the camera and designed this website.
The mouth of the Grey River is just visible with Point Elizabeth near the centre of the image. The Rapahoe Range can be seen to the right and when conditions are favourable, the famous and world renowned Greymouth Barber can also be seen. This weather phenomenum causes a plume of fog to form over the Grey River.
The solution was an IP network camera capable of capturing and transferring an image to the web using its own internal processor. The camera also features sensors for temperature, humidity and barometric pressure which are all displayed on the image.
The Grey District Council made the domain name available to the Rotary Club of Greymouth for the promotion of Greymouth as a destination for discovering the real West Coast.
The Greymouth area has a colourful history of gold and coal mining, timber and fishing. The local museum and nearby Shantytown are popular tourist attractions.
The historic Monteiths Brewery is something of a New Zealand legend. Various tourist operators are based in Greymouth to offer visitors a glimpse of what the West Coast truly has to offer. The Trans Alpine train runs between Christchurch and Greymouth daily.
www.takeabreak.co.nz Ltd. are proud to be associated with the Rotary Club of Greymouth with this project.
